I had to share this graphic. Look at the Portland Metro area. There are only 3 parts of the community that did not loose value in the last year: Tigard/Wilsonville and Lake Oswego/West Linn. And appreciation in LO/WL has been a healthy 5.9%. You should feel very good about choosing Lake Oswego as a place to live or to aspire to live. Not only is it a terrific community, but it’s a great investment.
I think last week, the week between Christmas and New Year’s, is probably the slowest week of the year for real estate activity. Yet, real estate still happens. In Lake Oswego there were 2 new listings, one of which sold quickly, and appears in this report as a pending sale. There were 3 pending sales, and, impressively, there were 10 closed sales.
The reason that real estate still happens, even on the slowest week of the year, is because life still happens. People get married, get new jobs, have babies, life goes on. There is literally no time of the year that isn’t a good time to buy a house or to sell a house.

While we are all looking forward to celebration of the holidays, it’s not too early to start figuring out how to recycle your Christmas tree, if you have one to recycle.
Republic Services allows trees to be recycled in the normal curbside collection via your yard debris. Please remember that the tree must fit completely within the bin, and that may mean that you need to cut it up. They also offer tree pick up, for a fee, if you do not have yard debris collection as part of your normal service. You can call them at 503-636-3011, to make arrangements.
Local Scout Troop 221 will be recycling Christmas trees and wreaths between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7. The drive-up recycling service will be located at the Mountain Park Church overflow parking lot (SW Jefferson Ave. & SW McNary Pkwy). The suggested donation is $12 per tree, $10 for wreath, and $15 for pick up in area codes 97219, 97034, 97035. Flocked trees are not accepted. Local Lake Oswego Girl Scout Troop 40343 will be recycling trees and wreaths from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the upper parking lot of George Rogers on the following dates: December 29, 30, 31 and January 1, 6, 7. Lake Osweg Scout Troop 555 will be recycling Christmas trees and wreaths between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7. The drive up recycling service will be in the Yakima parking lot at 4101 Kruse Way in Lake Oswego. The suggested donation is $10 per tree and $8 per wreath. The Arts Council of Lake Oswego has set up a holiday market place where you will find beautiful arts and crafts for sale. Ceramics, jewelry, ornaments, cards, candles, soaps, textiles and more can be found at the ARTspace, 380 A Avenue, Suite A. Hours are Tuesday thru Friday from 10 to 5.
There are 28 artists participating, with 2 featured artists. Janl Pahl does encaustic paintings that capture the beauty of the natural world. LeBrie Rich is a felt artist. She has created felting kits that make it easy for anyone to explore the art of felting.
The Holiday Market Place runs through December 23rd.
Another option is participating in the Holiday Savings Pass. I’m going to start this market activity report with some good news. According to the Mortgage Bankers Association, home purchase mortgage applications have gone up 35% in recent weeks. That’s a huge jump and unusual for this time of year.
Here on a local level, last week in Lake Oswego there were 4 new listings, 7 properties that moved to pending status, and 17 sold/closed sales. Something tells me that there are moving trucks arriving in LO this week with holiday trees tied to their roofs.

Thanksgiving is, for me, hands down my favorite holiday. It’s so simple. Friends, family, and pausing to give thanks for the bounty that is our lives. Not overly commercialized. Not about “stuff”, but about the basics of what is really important in life.
Linda and I want to wish many blessings upon you and your family this Thanksgiving. Enjoy the turkey, the stuffing, and the pumpkin pie. But, mostly, enjoy your family and your friends. Happiest of Thanksgiving to you and yours.

There is a huge misconception about Lake Oswego. Yes, there are very affluent people and multi-million dollar homes, but there are also those on food stamps and living in homeless shelters (Lake Oswego has two). As a Girl Scout Troop Leader for about 12 years I met and interacted with a lot of families. I know first hand that people and families need help in this town. With the holidays fast approaching, this is a good time, if you are able, to do something kind for someone who is less fortunate. Lake Oswego has numerous ways that you can spread holiday cheer.
Swing by either City Hall (380 A Ave) or the Adult Community Center (505 G Ave) and pick up a stocking. Then fill it with needed items and return it to City Hall by December 6th.
Purchase and drop these items off at The Adult Community Center (505 G Ave), the LO Fire Station (300 B Ave), or the LO Library (706 Fourth St) by December 8th
By December 15th drop off new, unwrapped, toys at the Fire Station (300 B Ave) or the LO Library (706 Fourth St)
All year you can drop off non-perishable food and essential hygiene items at the LO Library (706 Fourth St), the LO Fire Station (300 B Ave), or at Hunger Fighters of Oregon (4 Monroe Parkway).
Gift cards to places like Fred Meyer, Target, Walmart, Amazon, Safeway, etc, can be dropped off at the LO Library (706 Fourth St), anytime between November 15th and December 10th. These gift cards will go to Clackamas County Women’s Services.
December 9th, 10am to noon, this event is hosted by The Rotary Club of Lake Oswego and the LO Fire Department. It will occur at the main fire station (300 B Ave). Food should be non-perishable. Toys should be new and unwrapped. Toy donations will be distributed throughout the local area, including in Lake Oswego, by the Tualatin Valley Elks Clubs. Food will go to Hunger Fighters of Oregon.
For me, while I love the holidays, this time of year becomes much more enjoyable when I participate in helping others. Even though the gift goes to someone else, it brings me joy. My gift to them is also a gift to me.
