Lakewood Center for the Arts

Lake Oswego is a pretty art-oriented community. About town you will find the Gallery Without Walls, and art appreciation is taught by volunteers in the elementary schools. And then there is the annual Festival of the Arts which draws about 20,000 visitors each year for a full weekend of art and entertainment each June. I think a cornerstone of art in the city is the Lakewood Center for the Arts.

Located in the old Lakewood Elementary School building on State Street, the center houses the Lakewood Theater Company as well as a dance studio, art gallery, music and art classes, the Community Arts Preschool, community meeting rooms, and Re-Runs, a second hand shop that supports upkeep and renovation of the building.

The Lakewood Theater Company puts on 5 shows each season of extremely high quality. The stage was renovated in 2003 to hold 220 people with no seat more than 35 feet from the stage. Currently showing is the classic, Gypsy. Costs run about $30 for a single show or $130-$140 for a 5-show season. The performers are high-quality-local talent, with excellent sets and costumes. The theater has a history of 85-90% sell-out for performances. I have seen numerous performances and can attest to the value of the great entertainment.

I have a soft spot for this theatre and a personal story. Back in the late 1970’s, when I was in High School at Lakeridge, I had a good friend who worked in the costume department. One Halloween she got us permission to use theatre costumes to attend a Halloween Party. She and I, along with another friend, were able to go to the party as a Chinese dragon. Talk about making an entrance!

I highly encourage you to support the Lakewood Center. And whether you are able to attend a play or not, if you are in Lake Oswego you are going to benefit from the presence of the Lakewood Center in our community.

Lake Oswego had 20 New properties enter the market, 12 go to Pending status, and 5 Sold during last week’s Monday – Sunday period according to RMLS.

This must be some kind of a record in this market~4 out of the 5 properties that closed last week were on the market for only around 2 weeks at: 19, 14, 9 & 12 days… total time on the market respectively.  I checked the history reports just to make sure, but sure enough, the info is accurate. Where did the Lake go?

For the last 2 years the City of Lake Oswego has had a major infrastructure project going on:  the replacement of the aging and inadequate sewer interceptor line that ran along the bottom of the lake.  The line is about 9000 feet and was both too small, causing over-flow when it reached capacity in heavy rain, and prone to damage in the event of an earthquake.  Replacement of the system has happened in stages with the second stage now winding down and the third stage about to begin.  Completion of the third stage will complete the project.

Sometime in September the water level of the lake will be drawn down.  Remember that the water level is controlled at a dam that is located at the East end.  When the water is drawn down, the lake will look almost completely empty with the exception of the very deepest areas.  Mostly, it will look empty.  This will be the status of the lake until next March when the lake will be allowed to refill.  The new water will come from rain runoff, the Tualatin River, and area streams and creeks.  The goal is to have the lake re-filled in plenty of time for summer recreation.

I’ve lived in Lake Oswego long enough to recall the days when the lake level was lowered regularly.  It was part of normal management of the lake to drain the water out for a few weeks every other winter.  This allowed water-front property owners to do needed repairs on their sea walls and boat houses.  Then, about 10 or so years ago, the decision was made to not drain the lake on any regular basis.  Which means that it has now been quite a few years since it was drained and that means it is going to come as quite a shock to local residents who haven’t been paying attention.

It is my experience that following the draining of the lake not only does the lake look better (from all of the work that gets done around the lake when the water level is down), but the water quality also tends to be much improved.  Swimming in the lake next summer will be great!

So don’t be surprised when the lake is drained in a month or so.  The water level will be restored.
