Featured Neighborhood: McVey-Southshore

Lake Oswego has 25 specific neighborhoods and today I am going to tell you about McVey-Southshore.

McVey-Southshore is not a very big area. It is bordered on the North by the Lake and Oswego Creek, on the East by Cornell Rd, on the South by Bergis Rd, and on the West by Oak Terrace and Park Academy. To my knowledge it is all single-family housing. I don’t believe that there are either apartments or condos.

It is super convenient to downtown Lake Oswego. You can easily walk to the Lake Theater and several very nice restaurants. It’s also walking distance to Wholefoods local market 365.

There are currently 18 active listings in the neighborhood. The least expensive is a single-level house with a 2 car garage. It was built in 1952 and has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and 1670 square feet for $549,900. The most expensive is a 1939 house that has been extensively updated. On the main lake, it has 7220 square feet with 5 bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms. There’s an elevator, a swimming pool, a 3-car garage, and a full guest house with its own kitchen. the asking price is $4,895,000.

There is a small commercial district in the neighborhood with a Starbucks, a Thai Restaurant, and several boutiques.

While technically just outside of the boundaries, there is also a very nice park with a playground and room to roam, Freepons Park.

Lake Oswego has lots of options when you are shopping for a home. I think the word I would use to most describe McVey-Southshore is quiet. It’s a quiet area of nice homes and values that range from mid-range to super high-end.

Please let Linda or I know if you have any questions. As always, we are here to help.

Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts

One of the big events in Lake Oswego each year is the Festival of the Arts. It always occurs in the later half of June, so it pretty much kicks off the summer. This year’s event, the 56th annual, will be June 21-23. It takes place at the Lakewood Center for the arts and also across the street at George Roger’s Park. It is free to attend. Specific hours are 10-9 Friday and Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday.

Within the Lakewood Center a juried fine art show is exhibited. It’s so big that it spills out into a gigantic covered tent that is always set up in the parking lot. The show features local, national, and international artists. Spectacular paintings, sculptures and ceramics are show cased. I always enjoy seeing the pieces that receive awards and deciding if I agree with the judges or not. Many of the pieces are offered for sale. There is a special category for high school students.

Also within the Lakewood Center is the special exhibit. It is different each year and this year it is called Origin Stories: Comics and Identity. Its an exhibition celebrating “the unique formal qualities of comics as a medium, as well as the infinite possibilities of expression the form allows”.

Across the street at George Rogers Park is the much more informal art and craft fair. Booths are set up for artisans to sell their hand-made creations. It a bit of everything: ceramics, jewelry, yard art, just a lot of wonderful creations. Also at George Rogers Park is a food court and a covered area to get out of the sun while you dine. There are two stages where performances are held throughout the day each day.

There is just a lot to enjoy. I highly encourage you to come and check it out!

As always, thanks for reading the blotter,
Dianne

May is Mental Health Awareness Month in Lake Oswego

I am extremely proud of my city. The month of May has been named Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health has for centuries been ignored as a genuine problem, and even shamed. It is time for it to come out into the sunlight to be discussed, studied, and understood. As a youngster I lost 3 friends to suicide. My son lost one of his best friends to suicide. This is a subject that is very important to me and I am just so glad Lake Oswego has taken up the mantle.

Two different events are being hosted at the Lake Oswego Library:

Faces of Youth in Juvenile Detention, Thursday May 9, 7-8 p.m. This is a discussion of the use of art therapy in juvenile detention centers. It’s hosted by Paula Perkins, a graduate student at Lewis and clark College in the Art Therapy master’s program.

In Our Own Voice, Thursday May 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m. This is a unique public education presentation where two trained speakers share their stories of living with mental health challenges, from discovery to recovery.

These events are free. For information contact Alicia Yokoymama at 503-534-4228 or ayokoyama@lakeoswego.city

I also want to recommend a wonderful book by Judy Collins. Yes, that Judy Collins, famed for her incredible singing voice and classic songs like “Both Sides Now”. Judy lost her only child, her son Clark, to suicide. She has spent decades learning as much as she can on the subject and her book is well written, insightful, and very informative. Titled Sanity and Grace, I highly recommend it.

As always, thank you for reading the blotter,
Dianne
